Habitat for Humanity affiliates work in the local community to raise capital and recruit volunteers. The volunteers build affordable housing for and with buyers who can't qualify for conventional loans but do meet certain income guidelines. To help affiliates make decisions about what will be cost effective for their climate, researchers at the Florida Solar Energy Center have developed examples of Energy Star homes for more than a dozen different locations. The characteristics of the homes were developed in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity International, as well as Executive Directors and Construction Managers from many affiliates.
