Affordable Energy Star Homes

Energy Star Home Examples Developed for Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity affiliates work in the local community to raise capital and recruit volunteers. The volunteers build affordable housing for and with buyers who can't qualify for conventional loans but do meet certain income guidelines. For some affiliates, reducing utility costs has become part of the affordability definition. The energy improvements must be:

  • Cost effective
  • Readily available on the market
  • Easy for standard service providers to repair
  • Volunteer friendly

To help affiliates make decisions about what will be cost effective for their climate, researchers at the Florida Solar Energy Center have developed examples of Energy Star homes for more than a dozen different locations. The characteristics of the homes were developed in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity International, as well as Executive Directors and Construction Managers from many affiliates.
